When you see car crashes in the movies, they tend to be as the result of a loss of control in a high-speed pursuit or something similar. Yet the everyday reality of traffic accidents is far more down to earth.
Here are some of the top reasons people crash their vehicles, and all too often, injure or kill others in the process:
1. Drowsy driving
Some people literally fall asleep at the wheel and veer off the road or across the lanes. Others shut their eyes momentarily, or manage to just keep them open, but crash because the tiredness slows their decision-making and reactions.
2. Driving too close to the vehicle in front
If someone hits you from behind, most courts would consider them to be at fault because they should have left enough space to stop in time. Many drivers also rear-end someone because they are not paying attention, so don’t see the other driver slowing straight away.
3. Rolling reds
Not all right-turn intersections require you to make a complete stop. Yet that means you must try to check in two directions at once, and unsurprisingly people sometimes get it wrong.
4. Distraction
Distraction is a major contributing factor in all sorts of crashes. Thanks to the increase in buttons and screens in modern vehicles, drivers have far more things competing for their attention – attention that should really be on one thing only- the road around them.
If someone injures you in a crash, one or more of the above factors is likely why. Yet you might need help to discover which and prove it.
