SSDI Eligibility

Social Security Disability Insurance, commonly known as SSDI, provides monthly benefits if you can no longer work because of injury or illness:

• You must have been out of work for 12 months (or expect your disability to last a year or more), or suffer from a terminal illness.
• Your disability must qualify under the Social Security Administration’s definition. It can be a physical impairment (such as a heart condition, disabling back injury or severe arthritis) or a mental impairment (such as clinical depression, schizophrenia or brain trauma).
• You must satisfy the SSA that you could not perform another, less demanding job.

The amount of SSDI benefits is determined by how much you have paid into the system through paycheck deductions (FICA tax) over your working life, up to a monthly maximum.

SSI Eligibility

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a safety net for those who have never worked, have been in the work force only a short time, or have worked only periodically. There are strict income limitations — you must be eligible for welfare to receive SSI. The monthly benefit is a fixed amount, not based on your work history or FICA premiums. If you qualify for SSI, you are automatically eligible for Medicaid health care coverage.
